The first 4 letters indicate the financial institution to which your banking provider belongs and may indicate the initials of the bank's name. The next 2 letters are to specify the country code, for example ES for Spain. Next, there are another 2 letters that indicate the location where the bank's headquarters are located, through a location code. Finally, there are the last 3 digits that indicate the specific branch associated with your account.

Why was the SWIFT/BIC code system created?

The SWIFT system (acronym for Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication) is designed to provide a universal and secure way to send money internationally. SWIFT is basically a messaging network that allows different banks to send and receive information electronically. Thanks to its standardized format, SWIFT avoids confusion between banks in different countries, speeds up and simplifies the payment process and reduces the margin of error.

Who uses the SWIFT code system?

More than 200 countries and 11,000 institutions use the SWIFT/BIC system, in fact, it is the largest international payment network in the world. As the codes are processed, their characters are checked against a global database to determine where the transmission should be sent. If you are sending or receiving money from abroad through a bank, you may need to provide the SWIFT or BIC code.
